Although some form of representative team for the Bay of Plenty area of New Zealand has existed since 1911, the modern version of the Bay of Plenty Rugby team was founded in 1976.
Upon their formation, the side immediately won the inaugural edition of the National Provincial Championship (which is now the Mitre 10 Cup). However, to date, this remains the only time that the Bay of Plenty Rugby side have won the first division of the competition. In fact, they were relegated from the top tier the very next year.
That said, over the years, the Bay of Plenty Rugby team have still experienced some successes in the competition, which has been rebranded several times. For example, they won the second division title for the North Island in 1978, the second division title in 2000 and were the Mitre 10 Championship winner in 2019. In addition, in 2004, the side also captured the prestigious Ranfurly Shield for the first time.
Now, the Bay of Plenty Rugby side are back in the Premiership of the Mitre 10 Cup and will be looking to add to their sole success in the top division of the competition.
Since the Bay of Plenty Rugby team was founded in 1976, 13 Bay of Plenty Rugby players have also represented the All Blacks, including Tanerau Latimer in 2009, Arthur Stone in 1981 and Hika Reid in 1980.
The current Bay of Plenty Rugby squad includes several players who have been capped by their national team. This includes captain Sam Cane, who is also the current captain of the Chiefs and the New Zealand national team.
In addition to this, the current Bay of Plenty Rugby team also contains several players who feature in Super Rugby. For example, Otere Black also regularly features for the Blues, while Nathan Harris represents the Chiefs.
