During the professional era of rugby union Exeter Rugby Club have been highly successful. The side won the National League 2 South in 1996 and National League 1 in 1997. Following a rebrand to the Exeter Chiefs in 1999, the team has won the RFU Championship once in 2010 and the Premiership in 2017 and 2020. This means that the Exeter Chiefs are the only rugby union side to win all of the top four tiers of English rugby. In addition, the side has also won the Anglo-Welsh Cup twice (most recently in 2018), and the Heineken Cup (European Rugby Champions Cup) once, in 2020.
