The team has been just as successful in Europe, too. The team were back-to-back European Champions in 2001 and 2002 and they have appeared in five European finals, the joint-second most overall.
The Leicester Rugby team has been known by the nickname of ‘The Tigers’ since around 1885. It’s thought that the side’s nickname comes from their playing kit. However, in the early days of the team, Leicester Rugby Club also had ties to the Leicestershire Regiment, who were known as ‘The Tigers’ after serving in Goa.
Leicester Rugby Club has played at Mattioli Woods Welford Road in the south of Leicester since 1892. Although at first the ground could only hold 3,000 spectators, it has grown in capacity over the years. As of 2020, the ground holds more than 25,000 spectators.

In the history of the Leicester Tigers, 153 Leicester Rugby players from 15 different nations have been selected to represent their national side. Plus, 11 Leicester Tigers players have toured with the British and Irish Lions on more than one occasion, and 31 more have toured at least once.
Although the side has experienced a major trophy draught since 2013 (they’ve only won one Anglo-Welsh Cup since), the side has still been moderately successful in both domestic and European competitions. As a result, several top players still feature regularly for the Leicester Tigers, including England internationals Ben Youngs, George Ford and Tom Youngs.
