Much like its provincial counterpart Leinster, Munster was founded in 1879 as an amateur side and until the team turned professional in 1995, it primarily played against the other Irish provinces in the IRFU Interprovincial Championship. Although, this period also saw games against a number of touring international sides.
Munster’s first taste of professional success came in the 2002/03 season where they won the Celtic League (now the PRO14) beating Neath in the final at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium. European honours soon followed in the 2005/06 and 07/08 seasons with the club’s victories in the Heineken Champions Cup – the club’s only European titles to date – as well as continued success in the Celtic League in the 08/09 and 2010/11 seasons.
In the last decade Munster Rugby was a part of the PRO12 league and continued its involvement during the league’s expansion to the PRO14 in 2017. However, it has yet to add any more trophies to its cabinet since its last title in 2010/11. The closest the club has come to silverware in recent years was a semi-final defeat to rivals Leinster in September 2020.

A few notable examples include Ireland’s Donncha O'Callaghan and Ronan O’Gara, as well as players who’ve also represented the British and Irish Lions like Conor Murray and Paul O’Connell.
Currently the Munster squad also has its fair share of full Ireland internationals as well as a number of popular players from around the world. This includes the current club captain and flanker Peter O’Mahony and South African centre Damian de Allende.
