2012 Six Nations Stats: Who Won the Six Nations 2012?
Six Nations 2012 Winner: Wales
The Six Nations 2012 was the 13th edition of the Six Nations and the 118th edition of the Championship (including the Home and Five Nations). The competition kicked off on 4 February and culminated on 17 March 2012.
Although the defending champions trounced Ireland in the final game of the tournament, it was Wales who emerged victorious and topped the standings. In doing so, Wales claimed their 25th outright title, 20th Triple Crown and 11th Grand Slam. Meanwhile, Scotland finished the tournament with the wooden spoon.
The 2012 Six Nations also featured a postponed fixture. For the first time since 1985, a Championship match was rescheduled due to an unplayable pitch.
This rescheduled match – a 17-17 draw between France and Ireland – featured the top 2012 Six Nations try scorer: Ireland’s Tommy Bowe. Additionally, Wales’ Leigh Halfpenny was the top point scorer while Dan Lydiate was the Player of the Championship.
Round One Review
Match one: France 30-12 Italy (Stade de France, Saint-Denis)
Match two: Scotland 6-13 England (Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh)
Match three: Ireland 21-23 Wales (Aviva Stadium, Dublin)
France produced the first win of the 2012 Six Nations Championship. Les Bleus claimed a comfortable victory over the Azzurri, scoring four tries in the process. This result allowed France to gain some revenge for 2011, when Italy beat them at home for the first time ever.
Next, England ran circles around Scotland. The England squad applied the pressure, with debutant Owen Farrell booting eight points. In total, seven debutants represented England during the game.
The opening round ended with an edge-of-your-seat encounter between Wales and Ireland. Ultimately, Wales started their Grand Slam-winning campaign with a last-gasp comeback as George North’s late try stole a 23-21 victory for Warren Gatland’s men. During this game, Ronan O’Gara became the most-capped player in the history of the Six Nations.
Round Two Review
Match one: Italy 15-19 England (Stadio Olimpico, Rome)
Match two (postponed): France 17-17 Ireland (Stade de France, Saint-Denis)
Match three: Wales 27-13 Scotland (Millennium Stadium, Cardiff)
In round two of the Six Nations 2012, Italy almost caused a shock. Thanks to an error-strewn first half from England, Italy led 12-6 at halftime. Fortunately, England rallied and scored an additional 13 points in the second half.
The France vs Ireland match was postponed until 4 March, so round two initially finished with Wales’ victory over Scotland. Wales put on a clinic – which included 22 points from Leigh Halfpenny – and overpowered Scotland 27-13.
Round Three Review
Match one: Ireland 42-10 Italy (Aviva Stadium, Dublin)
Match two: England 12-19 Wales (Twickenham Stadium, London)
Match three: Scotland 17-23 France (Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh)
Round three of the Six Nations 2012 saw Ireland steamroll Italy 42-10. In this match, Ronan O’Gara made his 118th appearance and became Ireland’s most-capped player.
Next, Wales claimed their 20th Triple Crown. After equalising 53 minutes in, a 75th-minute try and 76th-minute conversion secured Wales’ 19-12 win at Twickenham.
The round closed as France beat Scotland. Les Bleus successfully held a determined Scotland at bay and claimed a 23-17 win.
Postponed Match Between France and Ireland
France 17-17 Ireland (Stade de France, Saint-Denis)
The postponed round-three match of the 2012 Six Nations was rescheduled until 4 March. The original match was cancelled just 10 minutes before kick off, as the frozen pitch was deemed unsafe. This was the first time a Championship match had to be postponed for weather-related reasons since the 1985 Five Nations, when three matches were postponed. .
This rescheduled game between France and Ireland ended in a draw. Ireland scored all 17 of their points during the first half, while a resurgent France levelled 57 minutes in.
Round Four Review
Match one: Wales 24-3 Italy (Millennium Stadium, Cardiff)
Match two: Ireland 32-14 Scotland (Aviva Stadium, Dublin)
Match three: France 22-24 England (Stade de France, Saint-Denis)
In round four, Wales moved closer to their Six Nations 2012 Grand Slam. Despite Leigh Halfpenny’s yellow card, the visitors failed to make headway and the match ended 24-3 to Wales.
Next, Ireland triumphed at home. With three tries in the first half and a late fourth, they trashed Scotland 32-14.
The round ended with a nerve-wracking clash in Paris. After a hard-fought encounter, the outcome was decided by Francois Trinh-Duc. A stunned Stade de France watched as he failed to score his last-gasp drop-goal and handed the win to England.
Round Five Review
Match one: Italy 13-6 Scotland (Stadio Olimpico, Rome)
Match two: Wales 16-9 France (Millennium Stadium, Cardiff)
Match three: England 30-9 Ireland (Twickenham Stadium, London)
Super Saturday of the 2012 Six Nations saw Scotland struggle against Italy. They fell to the Azzurri 13-6 and ended the tournament with five losses. This left Scotland holding the metaphorical wooden spoon.
The second match of the round was the decider. Although France produced their best display of the tournament, Wales held their nerve to deliver a stunning Grand Slam win.
The final match of the 2012 Six Nations was contested by England and Ireland. England dominated throughout, with Owen Farrell slotting 20 of the team’s 30 points. As a result, England finished in second place and Ireland slipped into third.

The Six Nations 2012 featured what many consider to be Wales’ finest Championship campaign of the modern era, with Warren Gatland’s men obtaining their third Grand Slam in eight years. Meanwhile, Scotland finished last and earned their first wooden spoon since 2007.
There was also one big change for Italy. After 12 campaigns at Stadio Flaminio, the Azzurri played their home matches at Stadio Olimpico for the first time.
